So is a classical guitar shaped the way it is for visual appeal or for sound? I suspect both.

Hmm good question - I know the f-holes in the front of some string instruments get their shape from the physics of sound transmission - wrote about it a while back here: https://designlobster.substack.com/p/20-fractals-f-holes-and-design-morality
