I have no evidence to quibble with the statement - "no one man designed the Lota but many men over many generations". I daresay many men did, but I suspect it was the women that did the lifting while the men observed!
I think unfortunately the slightly archaic 1950's turn of phrase may be letting down the Eames' here! I don't think they intended to write women out of the design history of the Lota (and for that matter neither do I) but I can see how using "man" and "men" rather "individual" and "people" could make it sound like they are...
